“based on the state of upkeep, it’s hard to decide whether the adjacent buildings are abandoned or just in an extended seasonal dormancy” Love this line and imagery.
Those black dots are indeed oil rigs - original models for the larger rigs found in the Gulf today, or so I've been told. My family's from Mooringsport, one town over from Oil City, and I have a lot of early memories of paddling through cypress knees in a john boat with my grandfather.
Here’s my sad connection to a place I’ve never been before and yet another Caddo Lake story:
Joe Moore was 10 years my junior and my good friend. He was a forestry/wildlife biology student and temporary employee when I worked with him at University of Georgia. I saw him only once after he left Georgia for Texas A&M grad school and then on to work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Baton Rouge, LA. He was married shortly before his tragic drowning death in Caddo Lake.
